SOLO ANDATA/SEAWORTHY/TAYLOR DEUPREE: Live In Melbourne CD
(12K 2008CD) 20.00
"One night in April, 2007, the beautiful city of Melbourne, Australia
was host to a small gathering of sound-lovers and curious passers-by
descending on the venerable Northcote Social Club for a night of
subtle soundscaping by Oz-natives Solo Andata and Seaworthy and New
Yorker Taylor Deupree, who was in Australia for a tour. After a great
meal and despite the ghosts of the BBC hijacking the audio system, the
three artists set out to capture the focused listeners with beds of
abandoned melodies and warm acoustic tangles. In hopes to capture the
memories of the night, and a snapshot of live audio and all of its
imperfections, Deupree recorded the evening with the intent of
producing this CD. Live in Melbourne pairs label mates Seaworthy and
Deupree with Solo Andata, a newcomer to 12k, who all share in a
similar sonic aesthetic. Solo Andata performed with laptop and a host
of small instruments and electronics creating dense and careful beds
of disjointed, yet beautiful music. Seaworthy transformed the stunning,
sparse drones of his Map in Hand album into a live, improvised
experience that captured all of the emotion that's created by a single
musician and his guitar. Deupree rounded off the night with his
characteristically sparse bed of tones and digital detritus. Live in
Melbourne is strictly limited to 500 copies."

WALKER, SCOTT: Scott 3 LP (4M 151LP) 17.00
"Scott 3, originally released in 1969, marked a big change in Walker's
approach to albums as, for the first time, the record is dominated by
his original compositions. In fact, the only other songwriter that
makes it onto the album is Walker's idol, Belgium's legendary singer/songwriter
Jacques Brel. Scott 3 again features string heavy production courtesy
of Wally Scott, though it occasionally moves out of pop ballad
territory into a more cinematic feel influenced by Ennio Morricone,
among others. An huge influence on folks like David Bowie and Nick
Cave, as well as just about anybody on the 4AD label." 180 gram vinyl;
gatefold sleeve.
|

|
WALKER, SCOTT: Scott 4 LP (4M 152LP) 17.00
"Despite being the first of his solo albums not to reach the British
Top 10, Scott 4 was perhaps his best, and most ambitious album to
date. Originally released in 1969, it is the first record to feature
only Scott Walker originals. It is also the first to back off a bit
from the heavily string laden production of past releases, allowing
other sonic influences to shine through, from country to folk to soul.
The lyrical content remains intense as Walker tackles everything from
War to Stalinism to heartbreak with equal success. A classic." 180
gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve.

KONONO NO. 1: Congotronics LP (ACHE 021LP) 18.00
2008 repress. Limited LP version of the 2004 Crammed Disc CD release.
"Konono N°1 was founded over twenty-five years ago by Mingiedi, a
virtuoso of the likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called 'sanza'
or 'thumb piano,' consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator).
The band's line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and
treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets
salvaged from old car parts and plugged into amplifiers. There's also
a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift
percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers
and a sound system featuring megaphones dating from the colonial
period. Instead of apologizing for the heavily distorted sounds of
such DIY amplification, Konono N°1 have embraced them, provoking a
radical mutation of their sound, and has accidentally connected them
with the aesthetics of today's most underground forms of music as much
through their sounds as through their sheer volume (they play in front
of a wall of speakers) and merciless grooves. Hailing from Africa and
rooted in a very social form of folk music-making, Konono N°1 is one
of the main exponents of a spectacular style of music which has
developed in the suburbs of the capital city of Kinshasa. The
Congolese refer to this style as 'tradi-modern,' meaning electrified
traditional music. These are musicians who have left the bush to
settle in the capital and, in order to both continue fulfilling their
social role and make themselves heard above the urban din, they have
resorted to DIY amplification of their instruments, and the use of
megaphones."

Massachusetts band's Corridor of Faces LP has become one of the most
revered collectibles among '60s enthusiasts. Included on this CD are

FUCK BUTTONS: Street Horrrsing 2LP (ATPR 028LP)
27.00
Double LP version, awesome gatefold sleeve. This is the debut
full-length release by Bristol, UK duo, Fuck Buttons. Conceived by
Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power in the winter of 2004, the group
was initially born as an outlet for their nihilistic-noise tendencies
but quickly, the two Fuck Buttons realized they could harness the use
of noise as a tool to immerse and evoke. No longer afraid of melody or
rhythm, the group started fusing all these elements to the point when
drone becomes melody becomes rhythm. With their electric live
performances sealing the notion that the two Fuck Buttons are
attempting some kind of transcendence between the listener and the
Universe itself, one could easily envisage one's psyches being shaken
by the very rumbles of the earth's motions. Tribal beats and subtle,
beautiful melodies weave amongst contorting Technicolor drone-scapes
while preaching distorted vocals scream for dear hope. Fuck Buttons
straddle you between the wall of sound that lies between the beginning
of destruction and the end of birth. This grand noise will fondle you
into a state of totally immersed euphoria.

BROWN ENSEMBLE, ROB: Crown Trunk Root Funk CD (AUM 044CD)
20.00
"Rob Brown is an awesome alto saxophonist, a mercurial improviser who
is perpetually inventive. AUM Fidelity has recorded him many times
over the years as a foundation member of the groups of William Parker,
and in conjunction with out drummer Whit Dickey. In this time, Brown
has revealed himself to be a composer and group leader of distinct
gifts. This is our first release with Mr. Brown as leader. A principal
focus of Crown Trunk Root Funk is deep grooves, often dark and ominous,
with levity provided by Brown's indelible melodies and the highly
exploratory work of this extraordinary band. Parker provides the root
bass, and drummer Gerald Cleaver brings his supremely sensitive
musicality and Detroit-bred funk. Keyboardist and fellow Detroit
native Craig Taborn (whose collaborative pedigree spans Tim Berne,
James Carter, Carl Craig, Roscoe Mitchell, Meat Beat Manifesto, Chris
Potter) is likewise endlessly inventive within this tremendously
rewarding sonic ecosystem."

|
CAMPBELL ENSEMBLE, ROY: Akhenaten Suite CD (AUM 045CD)
20.00
"Roy Campbell is a jazz trumpeter and composer of the first order, one
who encompasses the tradition even as he pushes the music forward. A
founding member of the luminous collective Other Dimensions In Music,
as well as Marc Ribot's recent Spiritual Unity project, his last album
as a nominal leader, 2001's Ethnic Stew and Brew (w/ William Parker
and Hamid Drake) topped countless year-end top 10 lists. The
well-traveled trumpeter has long been a sonic frontiersman, embracing
the universality of a sound continuum in which the Harlem-bound A
Train and the majestic River Nile are moonlit reflections of each
other. Here, Campbell turns his hand to an extended work inspired by
Amenhotep IV, Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty of Egypt. Akhenaten Suite,
specially commissioned for and recorded live at the 2007 Vision
Festival, is a splendid passage to a fabled dimension. It's realized
by musicians -- including Billy Bang on violin -- who have an intimate
affiliation with Campbell's vibrant brass stylings and wonderfully
open, expansive compositions. In the writing/otherworld manifestation
tradition of Ellington's Far-East Suite, Miles' and Gil Evans'
Sketches of Spain and Sun Ra's Heliocentric Worlds."

PIGEONS: Virgin Spectacle LP (BD 001LP) 21.00
"Beautiful dream-dementia pop from a couple tangentially related to
the Sea Donkeys/Sublime Frequencies camp in Seattle." -S@1. "Pigeons
and doves are so closely related, they are practically interchangeable
in the minds of the people who classify such fowl. But in the eyes of
the general public, the dove is a beautiful bird symbolizing freedom
and peace while the pigeon is a dirty rat with wings that eats our
city's garbage and craps on our cars. But maybe the pigeon is a crafty
bird, content with its own beauty and happy to obscure it to avoid the
glare of our ever intrusive public eye. Virgin Spectacle is a
distorted, hungover, and elusive statement. And it's in French. Except
one word at the end. Or more, if you are to believe those responsible.
Regardless, amongst all the fog and feathers is a collection of comely
pop and sonic excursions guaranteed to lodge itself in your waking
subconscious. Hell, you might even dream of a few of these songs. The
fine people who constitute the band named Pigeons would like you to
believe that they have stumbled incidentally upon such charm, like a
diamond in the mine. Don't believe it. Take yourself out of your
particular urban situation. Look toward the skies, and see the
besmirched bird for what it really is. They have laid out a sonic
journey meant to disorient on the surface, but if you follow their
flight you'll find yourself cruising along and singing in a language
you may not understand. Edition of 500 Recorded at Black Dirt Studio"

THORNTON, CARTER: Ten Fingers for Forefathers LP (BD 002LP)
21.00
"Odd serially-inflected compositions for classical guitar. A wide
breadth of obscure and fragmented influences represented here, all
internal. Carter Thornton of Izititiz and Zakashi-Warashi." - S@1. "If
you are a fan of the archaic format of music storage and delivery
known as vinyl then you are also probably experienced in the art of
search and rescue when faced with a pre-auction era, dusty, moldy shop
filled to the rafters with such blasts from the past. Every now and
then one comes upon a platter in one of these fading outposts, marked
at about $3.99. Cover seams split, maybe some radio call letters
scrawled in marker, maybe a booze/coffee/bongwater spill splayed like
a Rorschach on the back. Perhaps it is the cover art itself that draws
your attention... black and white photos seemingly from another time
in content and message. Or perhaps it is the title of the album... the
way it rolls off the tongue, its playfulness marked by a seemingly
obscure reference. The fact that there are no song titles may pique
your interest... why is this? Are there even songs on there? You can
see the gaps in the grooves so there is some sound being broken up
with seconds of silence. You wipe the grime off the grooves with your
shirt sleeve and take the disc over to the crappy player up by the
register. You pop it on, slip the needle in the groove, and
immediately you have the thought 'What the hell is this?!?!?' You're
hearing one of those rare recordings of a singular and personal
vision. A solo guitar performance that not only operates outside any
current or previous fashions, but one that seems to render the idea of
recorded music as commerce a nonreality. Although you are carried away
with delight by the sounds you are hearing, you can't help but wonder
why this person recorded this music. His intent is as elusive as the
music he is presenting. It seems as though you are there with the
player, this audio mirage helped by sounds of his chair creaking, his
arm brushing against the side of his instrument, his fingers scraping
across the strings. You purchase the item straightaway, as determined
to figure out the history of the recording as you are to wear out its
grooves with repeated listenings. With Ten Fingers for Forefathers the
proverbial chase has been cut right to. Take a listen and see if you
can crack the sonic code contained therein. Edition of 500 Recorded at
Black Dirt Studio" --Black Dirt

SPEER & THE HELIX, D. CHARLES: After Hours LP (BD 004LP)
21.00
"The much-anticipated blast-off release for Speer and his band.
Recently rewarded 5 stars in Time Out mag by the music editor, this
album is a landmark in laid-back blues and country songwriting, feat.
members of NNCK and Sunburned." -S@1. "The inimitable Mr. Speer coined
the term himself upon titling his pre-Helix full length release...
Forgotten Country. Not so much a forgotten people of a state or a
rural area. Not so either some Souths gonna rise again moonshine. More
so a return to a way of presenting a music in the context of a
tradition (something those boys in the band are pretty high on.) But
this isn't your grandfathers Bakersfield we're dealing with. Tho the
tongue of the balladeer may spin tales ripe with a cast of characters
including 'the Pastor' Randolph Healey, Cheese Frog, the man from HHS,
Uncle Ernie, that guy with the black mustache and red Caddy who stole
your girl, and the true born sons of Levi, he sings them not only with
the twang of the roadhouse, but tainted with the grit of the streets
of the big city. As one casual listener once noted to the band after a
performance, 'You guys play both types... country and psych.' And it's
true that the sounds contained on After Hours do act on the mind as
much as they tug at the heartstrings. Replete with tales of mental
instability, infidelity, drunken advice, wartime hucksters, heartbreak,
and redemption, the first album by D. Charles with his backing band
will surely immediately stand out amongst the shards of gothic
Americana that litter our fair sonic landscape. Edition of 500.
Recorded at Black Dirt Studio" -- Black Dirt.

RUSALNAIA (FEAT. SHARRON KRAUS): Rusalnaia CD (CAM 082CD)
21.00
"Recorded in two sessions through 2007 when Sharron Kraus & Gillian
Chadwick teamed up with engineer Greg Weeks, who helped capture the
duo's organic & sometimes unusual instrumentation, from dulcimer &
guitar to pennywhistles & goat's nail shaker, and contributed his own
accents to a few tracks: acid Les Paul leads & vintage '70s synths.
Eight tracks of haunting, ritualistic, magical pagan-folk were the
result, varying from the darkly processional tale of dispossession 'Shifting
Sands,' though the Comus-like ceremonies of the title track, to the
extended forest-folk trance on the concluding 'Wild Summer.'"

Arthur Pochon aka Art Bleek is the producer with a classically-trained
jazz background who has released on labels such as Lounging Records,
Rush Hour and Resopal Red. Art's sound has since mutated more and more
in the direction of techno, minimal and deep house while still keeping
a jazzy twist. With Euphorized, Art presents three outstanding and
diversified tunes -- early '90s XTC vibes, to deep tech-house, these
are tracks made for special moments in the club.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Frank Kusserow has been amongst the

in the U-Bar of U60311. "Atomsplit" catapults the machines towards a

transports a psychoactive synthesizer fantasy with a brilliant
lift-off break. Two uncompromising Kusserow tracks.

OCHS, PHIL: I Ain't Marching Anymore LP (EKS 7287LP)
15.00
Exact repro LP reissue. Phil Ochs' second album, originally issued on
Elektra in 1965; produced by Jac Holzman. "1965's I Ain't Marching
Anymore contained perhaps Ochs' most issue-driven songwriting.
Militarism, American imperialism, the Vietnam War, labor struggles,
and the explosive conflicts of the Civil Rights movement -- one or the
other of these concerns were behind the messages of almost every song.
If this ensured that some of the pieces would be more dated than Ochs'
subsequent, more diverse repertoire, they also provide something of a
snapshot of the mid-1960s social turmoil that both enraged and
inspired his generation."

MAN & FRIENDS: Christmas At The Patti CD (ECLEC 2018CD)
22.00
"Man's importance in the history of Welsh rock music cannot be
understated. Fusing the worlds of psychedelia, blues, rock and roll
and West Coast-inspired rock, they were simply one of Britain's most
original groups of the 1970s. Recorded on December 19, 1972 at a
Christmas concert in Swansea, the album features amazing performances
by Man and their friends Dave Edmunds, Help Yourself with Deke Leonard
et al., and is a wonderful document. Released as a limited edition
double album in July 1973, the album is now remastered and is
available once more in definitive form. The reissue book features
previously unseen photos and liner notes exclusively penned by Man
guitarist and raconteur Deke Leonard. The time is right to
re-experience the musical ages of Man!"

EAST OF EDEN: Mercator Projected CD (ECLEC 2033CD)
22.00
"A milestone in the birth of 'progressive' rock, East of Eden's debut
album, Mercator Projected has been cited by MOJO magazine as a minor
masterpiece. Released on the legendary Deram label in 1969, the album
established East of Eden as a major act, particularly in France, where
the band had several top ten singles and major album success. An
imaginative fusion of jazz, psychedelia and world music, Mercator
Projected has been remastered from the original master tapes and
features twenty minutes of bonus material, including previously
unreleased extended demo versions of 'Waterways' and 'In The Stable of
the Sphinx' and East of Eden's take on The Byrds' classic 'Eight Miles
High.' All original artwork has been restored and the booklet features
many unseen photographs and memorabilia."

|
EAST OF EDEN: Snafu CD (ECLEC 2034CD) 22.00
"East of Eden's second album Snafu was originally released in 1970 by
Deram Records and saw the band take their particular fusion of jazz,
psychedelia, world music and even blue beat, one step further. As ever,
the instrumental prowess of Dave Arbus on violin dominated the music,
leading eventually to Arbus playing the infamous violin solo on 'Baba
O'Reilly' by The Who. Snafu was the result of many months in the
studio, where a second album had been virtually completed before being
shelved in favor of starting work on a fresh project. This Esoteric
Recordings reissue has been remastered from the original master tapes
and features many unreleased bonus tracks, including five previously
unreleased tracks from the aborted album sessions and alternate demo
and single versions of their 1971 hit, 'Jig-A-Jig.' An extensive essay
features interviews and previously unseen photographs."

EGG: The Polite Force CD (ECLEC 2036CD) 22.00

and appears alongside the reissue of Egg. With these releases, the
entire Egg back catalog is now available on Esoteric Recordings."

VA: 10 Years Frisbee #03 12" (FRISBEE 077EP) 11.00
Andy Lee's "Lope" is an overwhelming pumping techno stomper,
programmed in a 6/8-measure, which is challenging for all DJs who

MAUSER: Jack Orchestra 12" (GEN 030EP) 7.50
"First launched in 1992, Generator became one of Detroit's most
revered techno labels for straight ahead dancefloor techno. Guided by
the multi-talented Alan D. Oldham aka DJ T1000 (Pure Sonik/DJAX
Records/Tresor), Generator boasted inspired releases from himself and
Woody McBride, remixes from UK superstar Dave Clarke and seminal first
releases by Sean Deason, Marco Passarani, and many others. Generator
is now back in gear and releasing electronic music influenced by
Chicago and Detroit. Chicago native Mauser aka Miles Christian drops
his debut 12" featuring 4 seriously bangin' tracks crafted in the
spirit and excitement of acid classics from artists like Larry Heard/Fingers
Inc., Sleezy D, Scrappy, and Phuture yet employing modern techno
characteristics. 'Jack Orchestra' is the 303ish lead track
incorporating Detroit soul with constantly shifting patterns and deep
chord progressions to shape a dramatic aural experience."

|
SKULL SNAPS: Skull Snaps LP (GSF 1011LP) 18.00
Exact repro vinyl edition, gatefold sleeve. "Skull Snaps is a
legendary funk album that has long been shrouded in obscurity. The
band recorded their self-titled debut and a handful of singles in
1973, and then vanished without a trace. In recent years, their vinyl
has become ubiquitously sampled and highly collectible. The monstrous
break that opens up their classic cut, 'It's A New Day,' furnished the
beat for countless hip-hop hits of the mid-'90s (along with James
Brown's 'Funky Drummer' and Sly & the Family Stone's 'Sing A Simple
Song,' 'It's A New Day' contains the most sampled break in music
history). More than just a treasure trove for the hip-hop community,
though, Skull Snaps stands as a classic in pure funk and soul. The
band's irresistible sound embraces the black vocal group sound of
early '70s Temptations, Chi-Lites, and Dramatics, cut with an
unmistakable originality. Every song is blessed with a gospel-soaked
call and response dynamic that contrasts gritty lead vocals with the
band's perfect harmonies."

11.00
The last of Honest Jon's Tony Allen series, presenting the legendary

recordings curated by Lucas Silva and mixed by Moritz von Oswald -- a
delirious brew of highlife, chalupa, Afrobeat and champeta. "Samba" is
a homage to Nigerian musical heroes, and the burning horns are
arranged by Colombian maestro Ramon Benitez. "El Lobo" tells the story
of a wolf lost in the Palenque bush and "Aguata" -- played in the
tambora rhythm -- is about rain.

CAGE, JOHN: Works For Percussion, Vol. 5 (1936-1991) CD (HUNG
31848CD) 22.00
5th volume. Performed by the Amadinda Percussion Group. "A decade and
a half after John Cage's death, his oeuvre still has much to offer in
the way of surprise. Cage had always said he was a poor historian when
it came to his own works -- and we are only now beginning to
understand what exactly he meant by that. When in 1962 he finally
found a publisher and set out to draw up a catalog of his works, he
created a selection without including every piece in the inventory,
but had apparently forgotten about certain pieces whose manuscripts
were, for one reason or another, no longer in his possession. He never
looked the lost works up in his earlier lists of works and never tried
to find them either. Yet the odds of them turning up then were
probably higher than today when, more often than not, it is a matter
of chance that for example bequests, from dancer or musician
contemporaries of Cage, which end up public libraries, are sifted
through properly. In the near past, several works by Cage came to
light this way; most recently two pieces from the library of Mills
College (Oakland, CA) one of whose title even had not been known to
scholars. 'Dance Music (for Elfrid Ide)' was composed in 1940 for a
dance production completing the studies of Elfride Ide (it received
its premiere, and probably its only performance, on May 20, 1940 at
Mills College)."

Minimal extravaganza with an electro edge. To make the package

EARTH, ROOTS & WATER: Innocent Youths CD (LITA 032CD)
18.00
"Innocent Youths was the first long player released on Jerry Brown's
Summer Records imprint, hitting the emerging Toronto reggae
marketplace in 1977. In 2008, the original LP is virtually extinct, a
highly coveted and extremely rare piece of Canadian reggae history (often
described as the northern answer to Lee Perry's Black Ark). For the
uninitiated, we are talking heavy bass, drums, reverb, echo, roots
vocals, keys, guitar, percussion, and Brown's wild style touch behind
the controls. By 1977, Earth, Roots & Water had developed into an
engaging live entity as well, based around the talents of Adrian 'Homer'
Miller (vocals), Anthony 'Base' Hibbert (bass), Colin 'Zuba' Suban (drums),
Matt Shelley (guitar), and Tony 'KB' Moore (keyboards). Both a sonic
and visual force, the charismatic youths soon found themselves
performing in and around the Toronto area, opening up for The Police
and The Stranglers while extending the UK-born punk/reggae love affair
to North America. In 2008, Light In The Attic Records along with Jerry
Brown and Jamaica-Toronto series producer Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano)
have decided to share this vital bounty to reggae fans the world over.
Innocent Youths contains the complete studio album lovingly remastered
from the original Summer Records master tapes. Over 30 years ahead of
its time, this maverick material showcases the breadth of Earth, Roots
& Water. Dig in..."

EDWARDS HAND: Edwards Hand CD (FLASH 005CD) 23.00
"Rod Edwards and Roger Hand formed this breezy, psychedelic pop outfit
after briefly recording as The Picadilly Line. Sadly, this album never
made it to a British release as their record label folded, which
subsequently took their EMI deal and UK distributor contract away at
precisely the wrong time. This is therefore a genuine lost UK '60s gem
that received glowing reviews upon its release in the U.S. It makes
its debut here on CD. Recorded on four track tape at EMI St. Johns
Wood in late '68, with Geoff Emerick and George Martin during a break
in the sporadic White Album sessions, you can hear the benefits from
Martin and Emerick's vast experience, technical skills and orchestral
arrangements. There is plenty of swinging London vibes and whimsical
vocals here, as well as dreamy vocal harmonies and elaborate electric
and acoustic arrangements very much of the era. The Beatles connection
is obviously strong, and much of this material is reminiscent of late
'60, early '70s Paul McCartney as well as Donovan -- with its chirpy,
evocative lyrics, harmonies and warm arrangements -- but there is also
a late Small Faces/Kinks vibe in their lyrical descriptions of old
London Town. Other late '60s comparisons would certainly include
Kaleidoscope (UK) and the early orchestrated material by The Strawbs.
This exact limited edition reissue is housed in a reproduction of the
original sleeve (featuring a sleeve note from George Martin) and
packaged in a jewel case. Re-released with full consent of the
producer and band."

EDWARDS HAND: Stranded CD (FLASH 006CD) 23.00
"Rod Edwards and Roger Hand formed this inventive, psychedelic/progressive
pop outfit after briefly recording as Picadilly Line. Having worked
with George Martin on their self-titled debut, Edward's Hand began
recording at Morgan Studios in 1970, attempting to create a harder and
more progressive sound than before. There where no nervous second
album vibes here! The album is comprised of evocative and intelligent
progressive pop songs immaculately produced featuring Edward's and
Hand's distinctive harmonies to the fore. The second half of the album
is effectively a concept of alienation and isolation, covered in the 7
minute title track and the 12 minute epic 'Death Of A Man.' which
includes an incredible 'orchestra duelling-with-Moogs' mid section
followed by a beautifully majestic and Beatles-like coda. Stranded
marks its debut here on CD with the inclusion of the original artwork
by Revolver cover artist and long term Beatle friend Klaus Voorman.
The line drawing of a Southern Sheriff, ties in with the lyrics of 'Sheriff
Myras Lincoln' -- a song about an American racist policeman -- and was
subsequently banned and replaced with different artwork by RCA in the
U.S. Clearly more confident and adventurous lyrically on this album,
Edward's Hand also had more time with George Martin during the
pre-production stages. This preparation time, an intelligent lyric
writing team and George's complex yet concise orchestral arrangements
give their second LP a much worldlier and unique feel. This exact
limited edition reissue is housed in a reproduction of the original
Klaus Voorman sleeve and packaged in a standard jewel case.
Re-released with full consent of the producer and band. CD features a
sleeve note by George Martin."

JADE: Fly On Strangewings CD (FLASH 014CD) 23.00
"Due to popular demand, we are reissuing the fantastic Jade album with
another extra track in improved packaging. Jade was one of the most
popular UK folk/rock bands of the early 1970s evolving from folk duo
Marianne Segal and Dave Waite (see their Paper Flowers album Light
Flash CD 002) Under the guidance of producer Jon Miller the duo became
Jade, with the addition of keyboardist/bassist and arranger Rod
Edwards. In 1970 they recorded their sole album and singles with a the
help of a glittering array of talent including Pete Sears (Les Fleur
De Lys, Sam Gopal's Dream, Jefferson Starship) John Wetton (King
Crimson, Family) Terry Cox (Pentangle) Jimmy Litherland (Colosseum)
Michael Rosen (Eclection, Fotheringay) Clem Cattini (Rumplestiltskin,
The Ivy League) Pete York (Spencer Davis Group, Hardin and York) and
Mick Waller (Rod Stewart). Fly On Strangewings was released in 1970
and it received rave reviews and comparisons to Sandy Denny and
Fairport Convention. Now over 30 years later, Jade's sole album is
regarded as one of the best albums of the '70's UK folk rock movement.
and it ranks along with The Tree's On The Shore and Mellow Candle's
Swaddling Songs as one of the great underground albums of the era.
MOJO magazine voted it as one of the top ten UK folk rock albums of
the '70s along with Fairport Convention's Leige and Leaf. Now at last
it is widely available to be afforded the classic status it deserves.
Lightning Tree Records are proud to announce the deluxe edition of
Jade's Fly On Strangewings with the addition of three previously
unreleased bonus tracks and U.S. radio adverts."

JACKSON, MELVIN: Funky Skull LP (LS 86071LP) 16.00
Exact LP repro, originally released on Limelight, 1969; current CD
version is on Dusty Groove. "Bassist Melvin Jackson has exactly one
album in his catalog as a leader (he spent most of his time playing
with Eddie Harris). But man, that's all he needed. Pumping his upright
through a Maestro G-2 filter box, a Boomerang, an Echoplex, and an
Ampeg amp, he made that thing sound like something from outer space
while keeping it firmly in the groove of the corner bar on Front
Street. Gimmicky? That's what they once said about Roland Kirk playing
multiple horns at once, too. As for the naysayers who think of this as
a novelty, consider the heavies in his band: Roscoe Mitchell, Leo
Smith, Lester Bowie, Phil Upchurch, Pete Cosey, Morris Jennings, Jodie
Christian, Billy Hart, Byron Bowie, Steve Galloway, and a whole lot of
others. All of these cats were heavyweights in their own right. What
does Funky Skull sound like? Psychedelic, funky soul-jazz and a whole
lot more. Jackson bowed his bass a well as plucked it depending on
what the tune needed. Produced in Chicago by Robin McBride and
originally released on the Limelight label, it marked an era of
exploration and Jackson was on the ground floor of the space station."

BASINSKI + RICHARD CHARTIER, WILLIAM: Untitled
1-3 CD (LINE 034CD) 21.00
"New updated and remastered version of William Basinski and Richard
Chartier's universally acclaimed work Untitled 1-2. Originally
released in 2004 on the noted Japanese label Spekk, the original
edition of 1300 sold out within 2 months. This new version Untitled
1-3 includes two new works 'Untitled 3' and 'Untitled 3 (reprise)' and
has been remastered with care by Taylor Deupree. 'Untitled 1' contains
Chartier elements from 1991-1992 and Basinski elements from 2003 using
the Voyetra 8. 'Untitled 2' contains Chartier elements from 2003 and
Basinski tape loops from 1981 and 2001 using the Voyetra 8. 'Untitled
3/3(reprise)' contain Chartier elements from 1993 and the 2006 sound
installation Mixing Desk commissioned for the Bleeding Edge Festival
at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California and Basinski
elements from 1997 using the Voyetra 8. 'Untitled 3' mixed by Basinski.
'Untitled 3(reprise)' mixed by Chartier. 'Richard and I became friends
after meeting at Tonic in NY when he and Taylor Deupree did a show
with Carsten Nicolai. He contacted me about a possible collaboration
and sent me a track which I thought was very rich and harmonically
similar to something I had recently been working on, a very swampy,
dark piece I was calling The Garden of Brokenness after a very
beautiful new installation by James Elaine. I popped it into pro tools
with my piece and something really special was happening, so I spent a
few weeks weeding my track, trying different things... eventually I
stripped it way down and we were both quite happy with the result.
Richard came up to NY and we fine tuned it a bit together and it was
done. Since the piece had changed quite a bit we decided not to use
that title for this piece. He then sent me another one and again, it
just worked with something else I had been working on... the second
track came together very quickly, and there you have it! I love
Richard's work... very elegant, like the man!' --William Basinski."

JELLYBEAN BANDITS, THE: The Jellybean Bandits LP (MAIN
S/6103HLP) 20.00
Exact repro 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing; originally released in
1969. "Newburgh, New York psych-punks the Jelly Bean Bandits formed in
1966. Singer Billy Donald, guitarist Jack Dougherty, bassist Fred Buck,
keyboardist Michael 'Mr. Addams' Raab, and drummer Joe 'Laredo London'
Scalfari originally operated as The Mirror, regularly packing area
nightspots like the local Trade Winds, Poughkeepsie's Buccaneer
Nightclub, and Burlington, Vermont's Red Dog. In due time, they
recorded a three-song demo reel that resulted in a three album
recording contract with Mainstream Records -- however, unknown to
Mainstream, these three songs represented the sum total of the Jelly
Bean Bandits' repertoire, forcing the band to write enough additional
material to flesh out a full-length LP in the course of a week.
Amazingly, their eponymous 1967 debut is excellent, a freakbeat cult
classic distinguished by Dougherty's emotive guitar and some
innovative production techniques -- all the more impressive, the album
was recorded in a single 12-hour stretch." -- All Music Guide

STONE CIRCUS: Stone Circus LP (MAIN S/6119HLP) 19.00
Exact repro 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing; originally released in
1969. "This superb blend of psych-pop and experimental acid rock
originally appeared on the legendary Mainstream label in 1969.
Recorded by a bunch of Canadian musicians who had just moved to New
York City, it received no airplay or promotional support and was soon
deleted, but has gone on to become one of the most sought-after major
label LPs of the period. Enjoyable from start to finish, it's a treat
for all fans of melodic psychedelia."

EDU K: (Edu K) Me Bota Pra Dançar 12" (MAN 023EP)
11.00
"(Edu K) Me Bota Pra Dançar" is a brand new track from Edu K,
featuring Marina, Bonde Do Role's former voice and front woman. This
marks the first release from Marina since her split from Bonde Do Role.
Edu K dropped his own vocal contribution and provided the heavy bass
lines and the dope beats that mark a new "baile jack" sound. Crookers
add some spice to this booty-bouncing anthem, condensing it into an
irresistible floor-smasher.

CLARKE/LIL LOUIS & DIAMOND CORP, ANNE: Our Darkness/Why Fall
12" (MO 009EP) 7.50
"What may be the last vinyl volume of this series breaking out to the
world the sound pioneered by Music Box DJ Ron Hardy in the late '80s.
Once again we have paired the cool Euro sound with the hot American
grooves as Anne Clarke goes up against Lil Louis. 'I remember Ron
Hardy dropping Nitzer Ebb (hard industrial band) in between records by
Marshall Jefferson and Adonis.' says Scott K. More club, Los Angeles
'in URB magazine there's an article on Felix Da Housecat where he
mentions Frankie Knuckles dropping cuts from bands like New Order. He
then credits (rightfully so) Ron Hardy for starting that.' 'Ron was
more adventurous that Frankie Knuckles. Frankie would play straight
disco but Ron would play all kinds of stuff. He'd play Eurythmics, he'd
play Man Parrish, he'd play Shannon, right along with the disco. And
man, he just stole all of Frankie Knuckle's crowd.' -- Marshall
Jefferson. Deep underground Chicago staple of music played by the
chosen few to the ones who truly know how deep it is. Now it's time
for the masses to feel the real deepness of the true Chicago '80s era
of music. Only ten percent of what happened here in the '80s, is known
to the rest of the world. Don't you want to be a member?"

"Till's latest release 'Gestern' (Efdemin Remix) on Morris Audio
Citysport is still booming, and here's already the next hottie: 'Sein
Days'! A melodic techno journey from Till featuring the remix
treatment from Mark August (Connaisseur, Innervisions, Pokerflat,
Perspectiv). 'Herr Bert' is a straight techno track, keeping a deep
and electrifying touch, while 'Berno' tends more towards a deep
melodic side and reminds of 'Gestern.' Mark August's remix of 'Berno'
is a classic house stomper that goes on and on and on! Supported by:
Laurent Garnier, Charles Webster, Kiki, Layo, Trickski, Jeff Samuel,

NEOS (GERMANY) |

SCHONBERG & LUCIANO BERIO, ARNOLD: Opus 21 Musik Plus CD (NEOS
10709CD) 22.00
"Schönberg wrote this work between March 12 and July 9, 1912, shortly
before he developed the twelve-tone system. He chose 21 poems from a
cycle by the French poet Albert Giraud, in the German translation by
Otto Erich Hartleben. There is no continuous plot. Each poem describes
a small scene, a lively image, a macabre anecdote, or a grotesque with
the moonstruck Pierrot. Schönberg's music and the singer's 'Sprechgesang'
(speech-song) fuse everything into a unity. Berio's 'Folk Songs' is a
short anthology of melodies from various sources (sheet music, records,
oral recollection) from various epochs and countries (Armenia,
Azerbaijan, France, North Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, and United States),
selected, harmonized and arranged by Berio. Sometimes the instrumental
setting reinforces typical traits of the cultural frame from which the
songs originate, other times these traits are disguised or sublimated.
Berio himself writes that 'these arrangements are my contribution to
the prevention of folk song performances with piano accompaniment and,
of course, constitute also a little homage to the artistry of Cathy
Berberian.'"

UZOR, CHARLES: Quartets/Quintet CD (NEOS 10714CD)
22.00
Performed by: Wolfgang Meyer (clarinet); Esther Uhland/James Aston, (speakers);
Carmina Quartett; Gitarrenensemble quasi fantasia. "In all three
pieces -- the 'Guitar Quartet,' the 'String Quartet,' and the 'Clarinet
Quintet' -- the melody is the comforting hand that was perhaps the
oasis of calm for Saint Augustine. Just as his perception, shaken by
the collision with the ego, wandered back to the content of perception,
Machaut's melodies wander to me, and perhaps back again, more melodic
mass than quotation, more parody than arrangement. Sometimes they are
pulverized, smuggled through their spectra, or 'sung through' using
traditional procedures of permutation -- inversion, retrograde,
augmentation, and diminution. Husserl's On the Phenomenology of the
Consciousness of Internal Time has occupied me for 25 years. Husserl's
greatest error was perhaps the most fruitful one: the tone is not the
slowest thing that decays; its parts decay at different speeds. It is
not only impossible to perceive a melody phenomenological: the tone
itself is an illusion. Its parts are the whole, up to the regress.
With this difference between a remembered melody and one perceived now,
between melody, tone, and tonal spectra -- a difference that signifies
nothing other than an aesthetic weighting and tendency -- I set off on
my search."

|
JONELEIT, JENS: Arbitrary CD (NEOS 40701CD) 22.00
Artists: Tom Schüler (trumpet and flugelhorn); Jens Joneleit (drums,
bass, electric piano, grand piano). "The word 'arbitrary' means
operating freely, on one's own authority or will -- and hence what
jazz has to be above all. The improvisation here is based not on tiny
musical material such as phrases or themes but on musical auras. On
Arbitrary the musicians 'take power' with clear and to-the-point auras:
above all, the aura of the electric period of Miles Davis in the 1970s
and the 'wall of sound' of Albert Ayler's rhythm section (Sunny Murray
and Gary Peacock). Such an arbitrary combination of two such crucial
and fundamentally different aesthetics of jazz has its dangers, but
nevertheless it opens up new perspectives thanks precisely to the
risks taken."
|

|
JONELEIT, JENS: Illuviation CD (NEOS 40705CD) 22.00
Artists: Roscoe Mitchell (tenor saxophone, flute, piccolo, soprano
saxophone, bass saxophone, sopranino saxophone, alto saxophone); Jens
Joneliet (drums, bass and piano). "Illuviation is an attempt to start
out and develop precisely from where it gets 'dangerous' for many jazz
performers and fans, transgressing a certain tolerance level.
Illuviation is also an attempt to cause seemingly irreconcilable
stylistic directions and sound worlds to collide, but not to blur them
mercilessly as in crossover or to allow one 'world' to force the other
'world' off the road, but rather to let each hear the other at the
same time and to enter into a dialog previously considered impossible.
As a guest on compositions by and with Jens Joneleit, free jazz legend
and multi-instrumental virtuoso Roscoe Mitchell is heard here, opening
up for the first time his full talent for a very different musical
spectrum, thus confirming Duke Ellington's motto: 'If it sounds good,
it is good.'"

VA: Don't Stop: Recording Tap CD (NUMERO 019CD)
24.00
"In January of 2006, the Numero Group found itself sitting three wide
on a weight bench in a damp garage. Eight hours later we peeled out of
the driveway with a thirty seven tape mystery. Though Jeremiah
Yisrael's Tap label only issued a handful of 12"s between 1981-1983,
the tape deck never stopped rolling, producing dozens of lavish songs
in disco's last days. From the string heavy sugar boogie of Jackie
Stoudemire and Arnie Love to pioneering raps by Missy Dee & the Melody
Crew and the Fabulous 3 MCs, Recording Tap covers a wide swath of New
York's all night sound. The single disc set includes a miniature song
book and expansive booklet stuffed with photos and memorabilia, all
housed in a miniature replica tape box. Includes rare and unreleased
recordings by Arnie & the Lovettes, Annette Denvil, Bonnie Freeman,
the Fabulous 3 MCs, Missy Dee & the Melody Crew, Magnetism, and Jackie
Stoudemire."

JOHNNY D: Orbitalife 12" (OSLO 006EP) 12.00
"After making a statement with his Gualia EP, Johnny D continues his
story of feel for groove and ecstatic party with his Orbitalife EP,
giving us another proof of his extraordinary talent. Absolutely funky
and without any compromises, that's Orbitalife. Despite its length, it
never loses its suspense. Or is the length that makes it so exciting?
An earthquake that shakes every dancer's body to the core.
Intelligently set breaks and a percussion groove here and there takes
the crowd up to heaven, just to let them fall back on their feet for
the next second. Pure explosion! 'Riddim Mood' tells another
percussive story. The longer you hear it, it creeps deeper and deeper
into your mind and a gentle chord slowly lifts you up from the ground.
Reflecting the theme of the EP, 'Tramodysee,' an impulsive and
hypnotic track, continues our journey into an ecstatic night towards
the late morning hours."

TAKE: Took One 10" (PBS 003EP) 9.00
2006 release. "With the release of this 10" EP, Take continues to push
the boundaries of instrumental hip hop music. As if his previous
release Forward Motion From Behind Tall Weeds wasn't off center enough,
here on Took One, we are treated to a pair of 9-minute songs that
further blur the constraining lines of genre. 'Rehearsing my Thoughts,'
and 'The Universe Collapses' are continuously evolving compositional
collages leading the listener down a dust covered road of bit-crushed
melodies and molested jazz samples. Imagine Dimlite and cross him with
The Books, sprinkle in a bit of Morton Subotnick and you're halfway
there. These are dense layers of meticulous samples intertwined with
moments of symphonic beauty, wide-open drums."

TAKE: Forward Motion From Behind Tall Weeds 12" (PBS 006EP)
9.00
2006 release. "As a partial departure from his previous work, Take
goes more towards an ethereal feel with this release. Having a number
of releases under his belt already, he is really taking a stand with 'Forward
Motion...' and delving into new frontier. The tracks are wide open and
delicately infused with gorgeous soundscapes and beats that hit.
Comparable to Jan Jelinek, Daedalus, and Four Tet."

BIRIGWA: Birigwa CD (PRCD 1500CD) 20.00
"Birigwa was a 23 year-old African acoustic guitarist and vocalist
who cut this record in the early '70s with the help of jazz players
such as Vinnie Johnson (drums), Phil Morrison (bass) and Stan
Strickland (flute & saxophone). Soaring vocals and strong rhythmic
grooves dominate this unique mixture of Afro-jazz, heavily leaning
towards African music, originally released in 1972 on the Seeds
label."

NATURAL FOOD: Natural Food CD (PRCD 1501CD) 20.00
"A funky, soulful and bluesy jazz record. A unique recording that
defies any easy categorization. Great grooves, soulful singing on
three tracks ('Siren Song,' 'Gin House Blues' and 'See See Rider')
by Latifah (Brenda James) and lots of electric piano are liberally
spread around on this recording, plus a wide range of great guitar
styles from the likes of Lance Gunderson, Paul Lenart and John
Abercrombie. Originally a private pressing released in 1972, this is
the first time it's been issued on CD."

SHANKAR, ANANDA: Ananda Shankar LP (RS 6398HLP) 19.00
Exact LP repro, 180 gram vinyl. Originally released in 1970. "The
covers of 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' and 'Light My Fire' (the latter of
which itself had borrowed liberally from Eastern motifs in its
original hit version) were the most obvious attempts to reach out to
the rock audience. It could even be said that hints of Tommy James's
massive late-'60s hit 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' could be heard
rattling around one of the Shankar-Lewinson collaborations, 'Mamata,'
and the bittersweet 'Snow Flower' was perhaps the most
psychedelically-inclined of the originals, overlaid with buzzing and
fluttering electronics. Yet arguably the best performances on Ananda
Shankar were those that emphasized the Indian side of the equation,
like the blissed-out 'Metamorphosis' (which managed to fit in some
funky drum breaks before accelerating into a mini-raveup) and the
13-minute 'Sagar' -- the latter, according to Shankar's notes, the
only selection on the LP played in the Indian classical style."

"The Thing team up with their long-time friend Ken Vandermark to
create some of their finest work. Recorded live at Chicago's Hide Out

DISKJOKKE: Staying In CD (STS 145CD) 20.00
"Staying In, diskJokke's debut release, is a tripped out mastodon of
an album. This is the sound of Norwegian disco taken to its farthest,
futuristic limits. It's epic, groovy, cinematic, poppy & most of all,
melodic. But at the same time, it is melancholic, and as the title
suggests, staying inside the dark winter & autumn nights to make music
certainly reflects the mood of the album. For years, diskJokke has
been closely connected to Norway's premiere club night, Sunkissed,
where he is resident DJ with G-HA, Olanskii & VinnyVillbass."

VA: An England Story 2CD (SJR 177CD) 34.00
...From Dancehall To Grime: 25 Years Of The MC In The UK, 1983-2008. "An
England Story is a unique album featuring over 25 years of MC culture
in the UK from past to present and includes everyone from Roots Manuva
to Tippa Irie, Warrior Queen to General Levy, Estelle to Papa Levi.
From dancehall to dubstep, hip-hop to jungle, grime to garage, the MC
has been present through all these UK music fashions: from the 'fast-chat'
dancehall style of the 1980s (artists such as Papa Levi, Tippa Irie,
Smiley Culture), the history of UK hip-hop (London Posse, Roots Manuva,
Ty), original jungle MCs (General Levy, Navigator, Tenor Fly), or the
new wave of current grime and dubstep artists and producers (Wiley,
Stush, Warrior Queen, Riko Dan). An England Story shows how these
artists defined black identity in the UK by taking the influences of
Jamaican reggae and U.S. hip-hop and writing songs about their UK
surroundings and subject matter. The album comes with extensive
sleevenotes, interviews, song lyrics and exclusive photographs and
follows a path from the arrival of UK dancehall in the 1980s to today's
grime, garage and dubstep. An England Story also shows the importance
of the Jamaican soundsystem culture -- its dubplates, specials,
clashes and heavy, heavy bass -- that has been a constant throughout
these different stylistic mutations over the last 25 years. Similarly
fashions, slang, dance moves and much more continues to be influenced
by the clash between contemporary Jamaican and U.S. music and
culture."

LIGHT, J.J.: Heya! 2LP (SBR 5042LP) 40.00
Previously reissued on CD by Sunbeam, now issued on deluxe LP format
as well. J.J. Light is better known as Jim Stallings, sometime bassist
with the Sir Douglas Quintet. In the summer of 1969, "Heya" -- a
hypnotic song with a distinctive Native American flavor -- took much
of Europe by storm, reaching audiences as far afield as Japan, South
America and New Zealand. Yet, despite being the work of an American
living in Los Angeles and signed to a major U.S. label, neither the 45
nor its attendant album would ever be released in America. Complete
with copious bonus tracks including foreign B-sides and the long-lost,
never-released second LP, also from 1969. Featuring contributions from
members of The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, The Electric
Prunes, Derek & The Dominos and Love, and assembled with Stallings'
close involvement, the package comes complete with detailed liner
notes and many rare photos.

O'SULLIVAN, STEVE: Mosaic Classics Disc 1 12" (SUSH 008A-EP)
11.50
First of 2 12"'s, from the founder of the legendary UK Basic
Channel-influenced Bluetrain label. "Steve O'Sullivan and his label
Mosaic were pioneers of the UK techno scene. Both are still a huge
source of inspiration for producers of electronic music around the
globe as well as music fans in general. After a long period of time
and an exuberant amount of hard work we are pleased to bring to
Sushitech these amazing classics which were originally released on
Mosaic 'back in the day.' The first part of this release delivers a
more house-based side of the label and includes three tracks that were
written well over 10 years ago proving that quality music is timeless!"

TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS |

|
NEPTUNE: Gong Lake CD (TOE 811CD) 20.00
"Behold: Neptune, the most harrowingly original band on this planet --
or the next. Its three members are, in turn, musicians, sculptors,
scientists, blacksmiths, electricians, and industrial machinists;
relentlessly inventive, possibly sane. Together, they construct all of
their instruments, forging guitars and drums out of circular saw
blades, gas tanks, oil drums, bike parts, VCR casings, and miscellany
from the trash. Electronics, and even cords, are homemade as well. The
combined effect is a bizarre, post-apocalyptic mélange of steel, iron,
wire, rust, rivet, knob and cable; it's lunacy, arc-welded for maximum
destruction. Concerts are seizures of motion. Wearing 40-pound guitars
assembled entirely from scrap metal, the members don't play their
instruments -- they battle them, like mechanized Golems. But make no
mistake, this is not simply art with sharp edges and serious customs
issues. Neptune rocks. Hard. Recalling the slapdash angularity of The
Fall, the rhythmic ack-ack blasts of This Heat, and the sheer
proto-clangor of Einstürzende Neubauten, they count as one of the best
experimental rock bands of any era. Their dynamic, expertly wrought
songs and skilled improvisations don't start; they explode. Gong Lake
is the band's first unlimited CD release, and with it the world will
discover what fans of their live shows have known for years: Neptune
is otherworldly."

MEGAFAUN: Bury The Square CD (TOE 815CD) 21.00
"From the vibrant Southern quasi-capital of Durham emerge Megafaun,
wearing earnestness across the chest and abstraction along the sleeves.
They pour forth dulcet harmonies, as seeking vocals tug banjo lines up
the Appalachian mountains; redemptive noise soaks everything, like
thick air wafting from the Atlantic. Clawhammer banjo and strummed
acoustics lock and roll with electric guitars and electronic textures.
They realize that folk implies deep, personal, intense expression,
whether the instrument is a parlor piano with the lid thrown back or a
distortion pedal with the case cracked loose. In this band, orthodoxy
and unorthodoxy flow together as one."

KAOS: On The Boat 12" (TNTPR 001EP) 12.00
"Berlin-based DJ Kaos has been producing twisted disco tunes for a
number of years and has been an integral part of the Berlin
underground scene. Last year's single 'Cerebral Tremolo' was released
by NYC's Rong, but was also picked up by Parisian tastemakers, Kitsuné,
and his newest single 'Panopeeps' features a killer remix by Shit
Robot. His turn at remixing has proved fruitful as well, including
work for Rodion, Tom Vek, !!!, Roxy Music, and New Young Pony Club. He
has also been part of the Faith Recordings 'Collectors Series' mix CDs,
with Danse, Gravité Zéro which he co-produced with Sal Principiato, of
the legendary Liquid Liquid. His latest project is called 'Bingo
Volume One' and features various edits of the good old times. Expect
nothing short of amazing, with a range from acid techno to true-blue
disco. The vocal version is featuring Xavier Othello Smith, who had a
big hit in the UK recently."

VA: Detroit Beatdown Remixes 1:1 12" (3E 017EP) 12.00
2008 repress, due to popular demand; these track were first issued in
2003. "First bunch of remixes from the Detroit Beatdown Vol. 1
compilation. Remixes from Mick Huckaby, Daz-I-Kue, Gilb'r, Koomba
Project."

|
MOELLER, BRENDON: One Man's Junk EP 12" (3E 088EP)
11.50
"The One Man's Junk EP is more than likely to end up in many record
boxes. These tracks are of equal quality but extend the musical
palette. There is more variation in the writing of the tracks and in
the sonics taking listeners and dancers into other worlds. The same
detailed and innovative manipulation of the samples keeps everyone
smiling, while the fat beats and grooves that characterized the Jazz
Space EP are here too, ensuring that the dancefloor only gets more
packed when these tracks are dropped."

NO KIDS: Come Into My House CD (TOM 108CD) 20.00
"Come Into My House is the first release by Vancouver, Canada trio No
Kids, which is comprised of three-quarters of the critically revered
pop band P:ANO. Come Into My House achieves an unexpected cohesiveness
despite the wide range of musical styles over its 12 tracks. Golden
era Hollywood musicals, Jam & Lewis-inspired production techniques,
the icy displacement of contemporary R'n'B, and the breadth of Arthur
Russell, disco, pop, and avant garde compositional work are referenced
and married together by novelistic narrative strains, a lush
instrumental palette, and a cinematic atmosphere."

TRIPLE R: Selection 6 CD (TRAPEZ 009CD) 19.50
This is the sixth compilation in Trapez's Selection series, specially
mixed by label co-owner and A&R of Traum, Trapez, MBF and MBF LTD,
Triple R aka Riley Reinhold. Triple R sums up what has happened in
2007 and gives a preview of unreleased tracks to come in 2008. The
64-minute mix ironically casts off with a track by Riley himself which
he has edited so that it functions as the intro for the CD. It mixes
into Bülent Gürler's "Koala," a great bassy track that was featured on
Loco Dice's Beatport Top 3 charts and was supported by Michael Mayer
-- super cool and spooky. SLG's new groover "Earthworm" breaks into
Bülent's track, and is a really cool Chicago funk track in the spirit
of Daniel Bell's DBX ones. Reggy Van Oers' mover "Cytric" follows,
mixing Carl Craig stings with minimal techno -- a real exception in
the world of minimal today. It runs into the trancy track "Endless
Ride," produced by the wonderful duo Salvatore Freda & Massimo
Steffanelli. Red Robin & Jakob Hilden present "Snapdragon," a bold and
super bassy monumental techno production that gets everybody moving on
the dancefloor. The label's first Greek artist Mihalis Safras is a
madman in the studio -- from his productions with Mark Broom to his
incredible work on the Minimise label, he pumps out two dazzling and
never before released tracks. The "Disco Bus" track by Aquilina &
Venturi features a groundbreaking rhythm and has all kinds of special
DJs like Jeff Samuel going wild. Alex Under returns to set new
standards with electro-experimentation and, to close things off,
Mauler aka Fabrice Lig, twists his Roland 101 bass line into heaven.
Also featuring 3 Channels, Massi DL, Alexi Delano & Xpansul, Roland
Dill and Florian Meindl.

TRESOR (GERMANY) |

|
RUSKIN, JAMES: Lahaine 12" (TRES 232EP) 11.50
"Six and a half years after the release of his last album Into
Submission on Tresor, James Ruskin returns with The Dash, delivering
prodigious new tracks that are not only stunning in contrast to his
earlier dark and urban techno, but even startling as the tracks unfold
in bold innovation. The track 'Lahaine' is taken from the album,
revealing a new, very personal and elegant Ruskin who shows determined,
decisive craftsmanship and a nascent approach towards production
techniques he describes as trying to 'bridge the gap between music
designed to listen to and music I would use as a DJ at the weekend.'"

room electronic club music. Steve describes the track as 'getting the
biggest crowd reaction of all my recent productions.'"

STEEN, JOS: Music for Tape and Turntable LP (UE 048LP)
30.00
"Jos Steen is a remarkable outsider in the purest possible sense of
the word. Telling stories about the dude always sounds like they're
untrue or seriously exaggerated, the way he lives sounds like a
fairytale and the way he acts would resemble the heaviest mix of
Bukowski and Bobby Colombo. Jos lives in a tiny house underneath a
radio tower of the national TV and radio station VRT, where he works
as an audio librarian. The house is built on the highest point of the
area in a forest. You can see it from miles and miles away. It's tiny
but can be called a museum! It is full of homemade instruments and
broken pianos, amazing wooden stringed instruments made of garbage and
all kinds of foreign instruments no one remembers the name of. Since
around 1964 Jos has been making poems, stories, paintings, collages,
drawings and music/sound to kill the demons in his head or jam along
to their forceful blues. Some call him 'the Belgian Beefheart' and the
people that already forgot about Beefheart talk about a local little
Howlin' Wolf. Jos always made self-released zines, tapes and more
recently, mountains of CD-Rs of homemade blues, broken bottle
experiments and heavy free music folk. This LP is a selection of
tracks of a recent CD-R of tape and record player experiments spiced
with vacuum cleaners, rotting voices, undefinable strings, pianos,
etc. It's absolutely unthinkable his work could be potentially lost in
time and space, for fuck's sake, the dude is a genius! In the past,
Jos played with free jazz greats like Peter Jacquemin, André Goudbeek,
Yvo van der Borght, with poetry psychos like Roland Topor and Freddy
de Vree, and with Zappa's own Jimmy Carl Black who begged on his bare
knees to play with Jos ... well maybe that's exaggerated as well. This
LP comes in a gold and white cover by Dennis Tyfus and an offset
printed insert!"

THIELEMANS, ERIC: A Snare Is A Bell LP (UE 049LP)
30.00
"This is the first in a series of solo percussion LPs on Ultra Eczema
titled STS. A meditative psychedelic experience is what I would like
to call this, though I realize I make it sound like a silly zen
blowout, and that's not what it feels like at all! When I first saw it
live in a giant church in Mechelen, Belgium, I was yelling 'this is
the best show of the year.' I thought there wouldn't be an end to it
and didn't even feel a build-up to a more tense sound or a drone.
There was a difference in resonating sound and it definitely changed,
but as with more constructive minimalists such as Steve Reich or maybe
even Terry Riley, you can't tell when things change. That experience
got enlarged as well by the scenography he played in, a splendid
eye-torturing construction, built especially for this piece by
Antwerp-based sculptor Filip Metten. On record it feels different of
course, as you can skip the needle up and down to the end and back,
you can hear an enormous tension and sound difference. Though this
piece is written for only a snare drum and a tiny bit of vocals (resonating
with the snare drum) it sounds like either 20 people on a snaredrum,
like if Glen Branca would invite 567 people playing the exact same
snare roll, or like a choir, and by the end definitely like the sound
of a Whitehouse LP; building up strongly to the point of absolute
silence, which feels like a relief! This piece is based on a snare
roll which changes 3 times. Live, this piece can go up to an hour or
longer, on this record, it is one full side. The B-side is a
psychedelic etch! Eric Thielemans is based in Antwerp, Belgium and has
made percussive pieces for theatre, has played psychedelic guitar
music with Mauro Pawlowski, spaced free music with Sickboy and
Cassisini Division and a ton load of great free jazz with Andre
Goudbeek and Peter Jacquemyn. This record is limited to 500 copies,
has an insert and comes in a duo colored psychic design by Dennis
Tyfus."

MOMENTS, THE: Baby I Want You/Pray For Me 7" (WPR 002EP)
9.00
"In 1965, Freddie Perren and brothers Larry and Fonce Mizell recorded
a promotional 7" with hopes of gaining exposure via local radio
stations. Although the record went relatively unnoticed, the Mizell
brothers would later achieve great notoriety for revolutionizing soul
jazz music alongside their musical mentor Donald Byrd. 'Baby I Want
You'/'Pray for Me' showcases a little known side of this musical team,
resulting in a pair of sweet soul gems that provide some insight into
the musical roots of this enigmatic combo. 'Baby I Want You'/'Pray for
Me' captures the youthful innocence of these gifted young talents. The
songs are instantly nostalgic and evoke a timeless feeling of young
love. Few original copies of this record have ever surfaced, making
'Baby I Want You' an even more unique offering. This limited edition
7" is packaged in an attractive, full color sleeve and includes
extensive linear notes by Wax Poetics contributor Ronnie Reese."
